Iranian-American writer-director Suzi Yoonessi's wonderful coming of age story "Dear Lemon Lima" has become the indie darling of this year's Los Angeles Film Festival. This imaginative movie is about a heartbroken 13-year-old half Yup'ik girl named Vanessa Lemor (brilliantly played by Savanah Wiltfong in her acting debut), who tries to find her way through all the trials and tribulations of teenage life at Nichols Academy, a close-minded prep school in Fairbanks, Alaska. Vanessa's character takes the viewer into her story by making entries in her diary (hence the title Dear Lemon Lima). She gets dumped by Phillip, her first love, an intellectual snob (devilishly played by Shayne Topp) and she relentlessly tries to win him back. She soon find out that she really doesn't need him and finds true friendship along the way with a quirky group of geeky and obsessive compulsive outsiders. She also learns more about her Yu'pik heritage and becomes proud of it. Renowned character actress Beth Grant plays the hilariously politically incorrect principal, comedy queen Elaine Hendrix gets a lot of laughs as Coach Roach, and Oscar nominated actress Melissa Leo is delightful as the conservative mother of Vanessa's nerdy neighbor ironically named Hercules (Zane Huett).
