MISS WORLD CANADA, Nazanin Afshin-Jam, finishes second at Miss World 2003

First time in finals since 1989, Canada also wins "Americas' Queen of Beauty"

Canadian Nazanin Afshin-Jam of Vancouver was crowned first runner-up to Miss World 2003 in a glittering ceremony in Sanya, China. She is the first Canadian to place in the pageant since 1989. Afshin-Jam also won the "Americas' Queen of Beauty" for being the highest ranked delegate from North and South America.

Afshin-Jam, 24, is a graduate of the University of British Columbia with a degree in Political Science and International Relations, and currently studies broadcasting, with the goal of producing documentary films focusing on issues that affect the Third World. She is also an actress, international model, and Global Youth Educator with the Red Cross in Vancouver.

The gorgeous Canuck finished second to Rosanna Davison, Miss Ireland.

"This is a great day for our country," said Jimmy Steele, Vice President of the Miss World Canada Contest from the pageant's headquarters is Toronto. "Canada has shown the world yet again that we excel in so many different fields, from sports, to political leadership, to entertainment, and now the beauty arena. We could not be happier for Nazanin, and for the whole country."

Afshin-Jam wore an elegant soft pink evening gown, designed by Bobby and Sally Ackbarali of Toronto, during the final competition.

As the new Miss World, Davison will travel the globe raising funds for children's charities, and has the opportunity to become a recognized spokesperson for a variety of international companies and products.

The Miss World Organization, based in London, England, has been instrumental in raising over CDN$340,000,000 for children's charities worldwide under its motto of "Beauty With A Purpose". In addition, Miss World is the largest annual television event on the planet, with over 2 billion viewers tuning in to see the show in over 140 countries.

SP Productions of Toronto is the Canadian franchise holder for the pageant.

Afshin-Jam won the title of Miss World Canada 2003 on October 22, in an event presented by the Holiday Inn on King, Christina Swimwear and Bobby and Sally Ackbarali Fashion Designs.
